About Southport Golf Club Gold Coast
Overview
It’s always a pleasure whenever I get the chance to return to Southport Golf Club. It’s not just the wonderful layout and condition of the Course, but a Clubhouse steeped in history. You can spend half a day looking at the who’s who of QLD golf on the Honour Boards. Now Professionals Ossie Moore, Tod Power, Stuart Bouvier, Peter Zidar and certainly the coasts best amateur never to turn professional, Tracey Dunn. It certainly brings back some great memories.
Who Designed Southport Golf Club
Club captain Mr E F Doyle had much to do with the early development of the 18-hole course. Final work envisaged by the master plan commenced in 1987. Eight greens were redesigned and reconstructed by Marsh Watson Pty Ltd, finalising the changeover to Bermuda 328. During the reconstruction period, eight new lakes were added to the course to improve drainage.
History of Southport Golf Club
Golf was first played on the grounds now occupied by the Southport Golf Club in 1924. The land, then owned by South Coast Recreations, was part of a complex that included a cinema and hotel. South Coast Recreations bought the land from Mr Holden, a local dairy farmer, whose son later worked for many years as a groundsman on the course.
